About the Artist

Siyo Nigad! My name is Tesla Hodges, but Gedi is my Cherokee name. I am somewhat of a newbie when it comes to basketry. I’ve learned from some wonderful Cherokee women who have respectable names in the Cherokee basket world, and what an honor it is to have this gift instilled in us to give to the next generations. I have never entered any show, but the baskets I’ve created have found homes across the Cherokee Nation and have been given as gifts throughout the country. I learn the Cherokee language together with my three-year-old son, and we incorporate Cherokee traditions into our daily lives at the Little Cherokee Seeds cultural program. Being encouraged to step out into the community gave me the strength to apply to the Cherokee Homecoming Art Show, even if it only was to say I did. Either way, I’m always proud of the work I’ve created, and I will continue doing this until the day I die.
