About the Artist

Jerry Sutton is a Cherokee painter, photographer and flute maker who views the evolving cultural history, the endangered natural heritage, and the continuing arts, traditions and language of the Cherokee people through a contemporary lens. His examination of the Cherokee woodlands, wildlife, culture and people ranges from detailed representational imagery to colorful abstract expressionism. He says, "I am always wanting to evoke emotion through color and form, always seeking the universal within the microcosm, always struggling to release the poetry that exists outside of words." He is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, studied painting at the University of Oklahoma and Northeastern Oklahoma University (BA 1976). Recent awards include a Best of Show 2025 Trail of Tears Art Show, 2nd place in Painting 2024 Cherokee Art Market, 2nd place in Painting at 2023 Trail of Tears Art Show, 3rd place in painting at the 2021 Trail of Tears Art Show, Grand Prize Award 2020 Trail of Tears Art Show, 2nd place in mixed media at the 2019 Cherokee Art Market, and a 1st Place in Musical Instruments at 2019 Artesian Festival in Sulphur, OK.
