Description

Ceramic, smoked low-fire clay, colored pigments, buckskin strap. These ceramic baby moccasins honor my first year as a grandmother to my granddaughter Taytum. Her Cherokee name is "ᎠᏨᏗᏍᏗ ᎠᏲᎯᎭ", which means “She Brings the Light.” She was born on May 10, 2024, during a rare celestial event, allowing the Northern Lights to be visible in Oklahoma. These moccasins represent the sacred journey of my grandchild’s first year, and my duty as her grandmother to help guide her along the path of Cherokee life.

About the Artist

I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and reside in Hulbert, Oklahoma. I have been learning pottery for the past year and a half under the guidance of Cherokee potter Tama Roberts. This journey has allowed me to deepen my skills and understanding of traditional Cherokee art forms. Through my pottery, I strive to honor our cultural traditions while developing my creative voice. The stories, landscapes, and values of my community inspire each piece I make. I am continually learning and growing as an artist, and I hope my work helps carry our cultural practices forward for future generations.
