Description

An artistic interpretation of the story of Judaculla Rock, representing the concept of the three worlds — Galvladi (Skyworld), Elohi (Middle World), and Elohi Hawinadidla (Underworld) — this painting is dedicated to sustainability. Judaculla left us with instructions on how to care for the world around us. It is our collective responsibility to heed this message and learn how to coexist in harmonious balance with the Earth rather than dominating it and to teach others to do the same.

About the Artist

Mary Lupton (Cherokee Nation Citizen) is a contemporary Cherokee painter and digital artist from Oklahoma City and has been creating art since early childhood. After earning a multidisciplinary studies degree with a minor in electrical engineering from the University of Oklahoma (BA 2023), Mary currently pursues her passion as an artist. Nature, space, and human figures are the focus of much of her work. She integrates Cherokee and Southeastern Mississippian themes to tell abstract and vibrant stories about the world around us. Mary strives to preserve and continue her cultural heritage while moving and inspiring others in ways that words cannot always express. Her recent awards include 2nd place in painting at the 2023 Cherokee National Holiday Art Show, the People’s Choice award at the 2023 Trail of Tears Art Show, a merit award in painting at the 2023 Cherokee Homecoming Art Show, and an honorable mention in painting at the 2024 Trail of Tears Art Show. Mary is an illustrator for Holiday House and is serving as Secretary for the SEIAA for the 2024-2025 term.
