Description

A girl and her mother are encircled with wildflowers and butterflies as they collect flowers in their baskets. This textile artwork was needle-felted by hand using a felting needle, natural sheep wool, dyed sheep wool, and dyed llama wool. Purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, Indian blankets, butterfly milkweed, Indian paintbrushes, bloodroot, prairie roses, and eastern-tailed blue butterflies are all native to Oklahoma. These colorful plants that continue to blossom and flourish over the years symbolize the resilience and beauty of the women who came before me and made life in Oklahoma one full of opportunity, joy, and a rich heritage.

About the Artist

Alicia Hilton was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. For 20 years, she lived and worked overseas in Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa before returning to her roots in northeast Oklahoma. In 2018, Alicia became very ill for a year. During this time, she discovered needle felting as a creative outlet she could do while healing. Needle felting uses notched needles that mat natural fibers together to create a felted textile. Alicia uses this process to create wool "paintings." Most of the fiber Alicia uses comes from a farm in Oklahoma, giving each piece a touch of home. In 2020, Alicia founded Nell & Ruth Designs. Named for her grandmothers, Nelva (Wofford) Ramsey and Ruth Hilton, the fiber art business is a tribute to their legacies of creativity. With Nell & Ruth Designs, Alicia invites you to explore the world through the tactile beauty of needle-felted wool art. Each piece represents a story of a life fully lived. Every felted fiber is a testament to a rich heritage and the timeless allure of adventures that lead us home.
