Description
This ribbon skirt tells the Cherokee oral story of Uktena and Thunder, reminding us of the importance of respecting nature. Uktena, the serpent, is seen in the snake print on the background satin fabric. Thunder is represented by the zigzagging lightning pattern of the ribbons. The gold appliqué pieces nestled in the crooks of the lightning are the diamonds found on Uktena’s head. Other subtle Cherokee symbols permeate the skirt, like the seven-pointed stars and oak leaf ribbon embellishments, from the seal of the Cherokee Nation. The waist elastic is adjustable. Hand wash or dry clean.

About the Artist
Jessica Lee Rose (Cherokee name, Wa du li si: honey bee) is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a multi-disciplinary artist based in Folsom, California. She works as a graphic designer and creates in multiple art forms, including sewing, regalia making, watercolor, book making, jewelry making, and beadwork. Jessica began delving into her Cherokee ancestry in high school, when she joined the powwow arena as a Fancy Shawl and Jingle Dress dancer. She has two daughters, who also dance, a loving husband of 23 years, who is their powwow roadie, and 3 Ragdoll cats, who sadly do not dance. Jessica has a degree in Visual Arts Media, and was taught to sew by her mom, who is her Cherokee connection. She has a Master's degree in Cultural Anthropology focused on factors of establishing and maintaining native identity and learning the Cherokee language. She is a finalist at the California State Fair, a National Typography contest winner, MAME award winner, and her artwork is featured on the UCSD campus. She also has custom pieces on display in private collections. She is inspired by Cherokee symbols, imagery, themes, and the powerful way women are viewed in her Cherokee matrilineal tribe, which is the basis of her own feminist beliefs. Her artwork expresses her pride in her Cherokee heritage.
