Watercolor painting on hot press watercolor paper. It depicts the Rabbit Chief. In Cherokee stories, the first or primary animal is often described as being a giant. This is my imagining of what a Rabbit Chief may have looked like.
About the Artist
Roy Boney, Jr. (Cherokee Nation) is an award-winning fine artist, filmmaker, illustrator, and writer from Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He has BFA in Graphic Design from Oklahoma State University and Master of Art in Studio Art from the University of Arkansas – Little Rock. He Cherokee National Treasure for painting and a Master Artist with the Five Civilized Tribes Museum. His work combines Cherokee language and culture with influences from popular culture. He served as Cherokee Nation Language Department program manager for over a decade before transitioning to Cherokee Film as a Cherokee Language Revitalization Manager. His work has been widely exhibited and has been published by numerous outlets including the London based Guardian newspaper and Marvel Comics. He has also contributed articles on Indigenous art and culture to various publications including Indian Country Today, Cherokee Phoenix, and First American Art.
