About the Artist
Siyo!! Aya Wali. I am 26 years old, mother of three and one on the way. I am a participant in the Little Cherokee Seeds Program with my two babies and my eldest is currently in the Cherokee Immersion Charter School. We live in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
My goals are to learn the ways of our culture. As well as the language, and to teach everything I learn to anyone willing to learn. Most of my resources come from the Cherokee Immersion program I am in. Everything I learn there I try to take to the community to those who are willing to learn with little to no resources.
I have dedicated my last three years to our Cherokee culture and language. I have taken a strong admiration for weaving baskets and twining. I first learned to twine from Betty Frogg almost two years ago and only took it seriously this last year. I’m also working with the Cherokee Artist Recovery Act to teach both twining and basketry. Most of my time is spent with my children, where we work on conversational Cherokee and having fun. Wado!!
