Description
“Rise” is hand-carved of a beautiful, semi-translucent Italian Agata alabaster. “Rise” calls on each of us to stand firm and resolute in the face of those who would subjugate others and exploit the bounties of the land. We are each stewards of this marvelous creation and we must stand resolute in its defense.
Materials
Stone (alabaster).

About the Artist
I am an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and a native to rural northeastern Oklahoma. My artistic journey began late in life, after retiring from a high-pressure career. Returning home to care for aging parents awakened long-suppressed artistic passions and encouraged me to forge new ties to my Oklahoma roots and Cherokee heritage. Through my art, I seek to explore the secret, hidden places that the fantasist in me has always known lie just beyond the horizon. In these forgotten spaces, I know the spirits of my ancestors and the little people still tussle with the old-world fey folk who were brought to our shores on European ships. Along this journey, I have embraced a passion for shaping stone. I especially love unearthing the deep, rich colors buried within each piece. Working the stone is healing for the mind and spirit. I become absorbed in the motions, allowing stress and worries to melt away. I also love that my workspace is under the open sky, where each piece absorbs the darkness and moonlight.
