About the Artist
About 14 years ago, Kim Garcia resolved to give beading another try. She bought a pair of earrings at a conference and was determined to learn to make them herself. The first stitch she learned from YouTube was brick stitch and a small pair of yellow and black earrings began her obsession. One day while scrolling Pinterest she read the quote, “Reading one hour per day in your chosen field will make you an international expert in seven years.” She modified it and decided to bead one hour a day, every day and was determined to be a beading expert in five years. Since then, she has set out to learn many beading stitches and then teach others. She has taught hundreds of people various beading techniques and is still very passionate about it. Since 2020, Kim has been the Cultural Preservation Officer for Wyandotte Nation, the director for the Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center and Museum. Her passion expanded beyond beadwork and became revitalizing all Wyandotte art. In recent years, she has branched out to other crafts. She learned how to sew, work with leather, how to pound a black ash tree and use it to make baskets, quillwork, and more. All of these classes were taught at the Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center and Museum, where they facilitate life-changing journeys for people to discover what it means to be Wyandotte.
