Erica Cheater
Cherokee Nation
About the Artist
Erica is a Cherokee Nation citizen from Park Hill, OK. Growing up in the Tahlequah area, Erica has been surrounded by Cherokee culture her whole life. While she has dabbled in various disciplines throughout her life, such as sewing, drawing, and painting, Erica finally decided to dive into beadwork after admiring the art for numerous years. Seeing a design come to life one bead at a time brought her great joy, and she was immediately enamored by the art form. Working as a self-taught artist under the name Misselaineous, Cheater has five years of experience in the medium utilizing the two-needle flat stitch, peyote stitch, and loom work methods. Her designs are influenced by her Cherokee cultural traditions and patterns and the aesthetics of the natural world. However, they are also infused with a modern, pop culture flair. This merging of inspirations results in a vibrant collection of cultural traditions with a contemporary aesthetic. Currently residing in Tulsa, OK, with her husband, Colby, Erica is constantly pursuing new projects and learning new skills/techniques that she hopes to teach future generations.
