This composition is a non-objective illustration of how Valentine's Day sometimes feels, or when you are in a relationship that's not clarified: exciting but also confusing. I utilize mark-making that emulates beadwork, basketry or stitching to create pattern and texture in my work. This references both Native American historical arts, as well as the relationship to, and value of, materials and crafted goods in my family and communities. Saturated colors are mingled with dark hues, and I used a watercolor base on hot-press watercolor paper, then built up and added detail with gouache.
