About the Artist
Ernie Poindexter is a 72-year-old Cherokee Nation citizen. After his retirement, he began woodworking as a hobby. He is self-taught and uses only reclaimed wood for his pieces. He enjoys researching and learning about his Cherokee heritage and creating pieces to depict Cherokee history. He began entering art shows as a way to share his work with an audience. Over the years, he has won several awards, including the 50th annual Trail of Tears award, and most recently the 2025 Master Woodworking Artist of the Year from the woodworking capital of Oklahoma, the Broken Bow Forest Heritage Center.
